Introduction:
Manipur Fire Service was established on 11th April, 1957 as a part of the then Police Department. On 1st May, 1991, it was bifurcated from the Police Department and became a separate Directorate headed by Director and Divisional Officer as Head of Department, Head of Office/DDO. At present, this Organization has got sanction of the Government for opening of 29 Fire Sub-Stations. Out of which only 17 Fire Station/Sub-Stations has functioning and distributed in the 16(sixteen) District Headquarters/Sub-Divisional H.Q. including its H.Q. Fire Station, Imphal with a total manpower (sanctioned) of 358 out of 533 actual sanctioned posts. 175 posts are lying vacant and out of which 122 posts are under process for direct recruitment.
The primary role of Fire Services has been not only to attend to fire incidents. Besides firefighting, fire Department also attends to other emergencies such as building collapse, road traffic accidents, drowning, Human & Animal rescue etc. Fire Services also includes effective fire prevention creating awareness on fire safety and enforcing the inbuilt fire protection arrangements for various types of occupancies.
